(If you aren't familiar with them, it's when a show goes too far, passing the point of believability... like when the water-skiing Fonz jumped a shark on Happy Days or when Indiana Jones survived a nuclear bomb by hiding in a fridge.)
But I think sometimes books can 'nuke the fridge' too. Case in point: Hour Game by David Baldacci. A few years ago, after restocking the Baldacci shelf for the umpteenth time, I decided that since they sold so well they must be good, right? I tried Hour Game.
It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't really good. I slogged my way through till about 20 pages from the end when the good guy and bad guy were having a shoot-out in the woods. Neither of them got hurt...because their bullets collided in mid-air. Yes. Two tiny bullets just happened to hit each other in mid-air, creating a spark. I was done. Done done done.
What books have jumped the shark for you? Have you ever read David Baldacci?
